Tara Sreekrishnan, a 30-year-old Democrat and community leader, has garnered significant endorsements for her bid in the California State Assembly race for District 26. Serving previously as a legislative director and deputy Chief of Staff in the California State Senate, Tara officially launched her campaign last month. Her focus is on crucial issues like housing affordability, climate change, and challenges within the education system.
California 26th congressional district is a congressional district in the U.S. state of California currently represented by Democrat Julia Brownley. The district is located on the South Coast, comprising most of Ventura County as well as a small portion of Los Angeles County.
“I’m delighted to announce that my campaign for California State Assembly District 26 has received the endorsement of our dedicated firefighters in Santa Clara – the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Local 1171,” Tara posted on X.
Tara secured support from notable figures such as California Assembly majority leader Cecilia Aguiar-Curry, Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors President Susan Ellenberg, and the California Labor Federation.
Tara emphasized her commitment to addressing key priorities, including making neighbourhoods safe, supporting older adults, tackling housing affordability, addressing climate change, alleviating traffic congestion, and reforming the education system.
On her campaign website, she stressed the importance of utilizing tax dollars efficiently and effectively to meet these challenges, stating, “Addressing these challenges – and spending tax dollars efficiently and effectively – is why I’m running for State Assembly.”
In her campaign statement, Tara, also a former piano teacher at a Cupertino music academy, said she wants to tackle issues like climate change, education, affordable housing and safe communities.
According to Tara, she is the right pick for District 26, having professional experience across all levels of local government — school district, city, county, and state.
Currently serving on the Santa Clara County Board of Education, overseeing 270,000 students across 31 school districts, Tara brings a wealth of experience. She has served as a top aide and advisor to a state senator in the legislature and the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors.
Inspired by her immigrant parents, Tara highlighted the values of education and community involvement instilled in her upbringing. Tara graduated from Mills College, the oldest women’s college on the West Coast, following which she set out to work as a community and political organiser for grassroots campaigns.
