Veteran actor and filmmaker Nana Patekar died on Thursday at the age of 75 after suffering a cardiac arrest at his residence in Dona Paula, Goa. The acclaimed actor was found unconscious at his home and was rushed to Manipal Hospital, where doctors attempted to revive him for around 45 minutes. He was declared dead at approximately 5:20 am.
Patekar’s son, Malhar Patekar, confirmed the actor’s death. Hospital authorities said medical teams made sustained efforts to revive him, but he could not be saved. A medico-legal procedure and post-mortem formalities were initiated following his death.
News of his death prompted an outpouring of tributes from across the film industry and public life. Prime Minister Narendra Modi remembered Patekar for his distinctive screen presence and versatility, while several actors and political leaders recalled his contribution to Indian cinema. Maharashtra has also announced that the veteran actor will be accorded a state funeral in recognition of his contribution to Marathi theatre and Hindi and Marathi cinema.
Born Vishwanath Patekar in Maharashtra in 1951, the actor began his film career with the 1978 film Gaman. Over a career spanning nearly five decades, he became known for powerful and often intense performances in films including Parinda, Krantiveer, Agni Sakshi, Ab Tak Chhappan and Welcome. His portrayal of Uday Shetty in Welcome also introduced his distinctive style to a younger generation of audiences.
Patekar was a recipient of three National Film Awards and was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2013 for his contribution to cinema and the arts. His career encompassed acting, direction and theatre, leaving a lasting mark on both mainstream and parallel Indian cinema.
