The National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) has become the world’s seventh largest listed stock exchange by market capitalisation after making its stock-market debut on Thursday. Its market value reached nearly ₹4.5 lakh crore, or about $47 billion, after NSE shares closed at ₹1,818 on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).
NSE shares opened at ₹1,800, above their initial public offering (IPO) price of ₹1,785, and ended the first trading session 1.85% higher. The ₹22,562-crore IPO was the second-largest in India after Hyundai Motor India’s 2024 issue.
The listing follows a decade-long process for NSE to become a publicly traded company. The exchange’s valuation places it behind CME Group, Intercontinental Exchange, the parent of the New York Stock Exchange, as well as Hong Kong Exchanges & Clearing, Deutsche Boerse, Nasdaq and London Stock Exchange Group.
NSE remains India’s largest stock exchange by trading activity. It accounts for about 93% of India’s cash-equity trading and nearly 75% of options activity. Derivatives transaction charges contributed around 68% of its operating revenue in the June quarter.
The listing marks a significant change in NSE’s corporate status, giving public-market investors direct exposure to India’s largest exchange operator.
