Dr. Rahul Sharma has been elected Chair of the New York State Board for Medicine after serving two years as Vice Chair. Dr. Sharma holds leadership roles as the Barbara and Stephen Friedman Endowed Professor and Chair of Emergency Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine and Emergency Physician-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian–Weill Cornell Medical Center, alongside founding the Center for Virtual Care.
The Board advises the Board of Regents and the State Education Department on licensure, education, standards, and public health. As Chair, Dr. Sharma aims to support the physician workforce, uphold licensing standards, and address innovations like artificial intelligence. He emphasized balancing technological advancement with patient safety and public trust. A nationally recognized healthcare innovator, Dr. Sharma continues focusing his research on integrating new technologies into clinical practice such as virtual care.

Dr. Sharma is a nationally recognized physician leader in emergency medicine, healthcare innovation, virtual care, medical education and health-system transformation.
Dr. Sharma has received numerous national honors for his leadership and contributions to healthcare, including the AAPL Roger Schenke Leadership Award, recognition by Modern Healthcare as one of the Top 25 Healthcare Innovators, and national and state recognition from the American College of Emergency Physicians and New York ACEP.
