Veteran actor Anant Nag has been selected for the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2024, making him the second Kannada actor after Dr. Rajkumar to receive India’s highest cinematic honour. The announcement was made by the Government of India on Wednesday, recognising Nag’s contribution to Indian cinema over a career spanning more than five decades.
The award will be presented at the 72nd National Film Awards ceremony in Kevadia, Gujarat, on September 22, 2026. Nag’s selection brings the prestigious recognition back to Kannada cinema 31 years after Dr. Rajkumar received it.
Known for his naturalistic acting and versatility, Nag has worked in more than 300 films across Kannada, Hindi and other Indian languages. His career has included roles in parallel cinema, mainstream films and television. He is particularly remembered for his performances in films such as Ankur and the popular television series Malgudi Days.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Nag, describing his performances as effortless and versatile, and highlighting his contribution to Kannada cinema.
Nag, who began his acting journey through theatre, has also received several other honours, including the Padma Bhushan in 2025. His career has been marked by performances across languages and genres, establishing him as a prominent figure in Indian cinema.
The recognition has been welcomed as a significant moment for Kannada cinema, acknowledging Nag’s long-standing contribution to both regional and national film culture.
