India and China discussed ways to improve mutual understanding of their differing perceptions of the Line of Actual Control (LAC), signalling a cautious diplomatic opening in efforts to improve border management and stabilize bilateral ties.
The eight-point outcome document issued after the 25th round of the India-China Special Representatives’ talks on the boundary question. The discussions, co-chaired by National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, focused on maintaining peace and tranquillity along the disputed frontier and strengthening mechanisms to prevent misunderstandings.
The two sides discussed ways to clarify their respective perceptions of the LAC in appropriate areas. While the move does not amount to a settlement of the boundary dispute, greater clarity on differing perceptions could help reduce the possibility of face-offs arising from different interpretations of the disputed border.
India has consistently maintained that peace and tranquillity in border areas are essential for the development of broader bilateral relations. The latest discussions therefore assume significance against the backdrop of tensions that have persisted since the 2020 Galwan Valley clash.
The Special Representatives’ mechanism, established to address the political dimensions of the boundary question, has previously served as an important channel for dialogue between the two countries. Both sides have also continued military and diplomatic-level discussions aimed at managing tensions at various points along the LAC.
The latest outcome indicates that despite unresolved territorial differences, New Delhi and Beijing remain willing to keep diplomatic channels open. The emphasis on communication and clarification could provide a framework for addressing misunderstandings before they escalate into larger confrontations.
