On any given weekend in Houston, Bollywood music can be heard far beyond the concert stage – from karaoke gatherings and community celebrations to living rooms and music groups where generations come together around songs they have known and loved for years. But how many listeners know the Indian classical ragas that inspired some of those familiar melodies?
On August 29, the Indo-American Association (IAA), a Houston Cultural Treasure, will present RAAGEET, featuring acclaimed Bollywood playback singer and stage artist Priyani Vani Panditt and her live band at Unity of Houston. Raageet explores the fascinating connection between Indian classical ragas and popular film music, inviting audiences to hear familiar Bollywood songs in an entirely new way. Through performance and conversation, Priyani will reveal how composers have drawn upon the emotional language and structure of ragas to create melodies that have remained with listeners across generations.
For Houston’s large and diverse South Asian community – including the many amateur singers, karaoke enthusiasts and music lovers who regularly gather around Bollywood music – the program offers an opportunity to discover what lies beneath songs they may already know by heart. “Bollywood music is often where people first encounter the extraordinary richness of Indian music, sometimes without even realizing it,” said Sheetal Bedi, Executive Director of IAA. “With Raageet, we want audiences to enjoy the songs they love while discovering the classical traditions that helped shape them. It is about making that heritage accessible, joyful and relevant.”

Priyani Vani Panditt rose to national prominence in India through some of the country’s best-known music competitions, including the 2005 Sa Re Ga Ma Challenge, Amul Star Voice of India in 2007 and Jo Jeeta Wohi Superstar in 2008. Equally comfortable with classical foundations and contemporary repertoire, she brings both musical knowledge and the energy of a popular performer to Raageet.
The program reflects IAA’s broader mission of preserving and presenting the artistic traditions of the Indian subcontinent while finding new ways to connect those traditions with contemporary audiences and younger generations.
