The GOPIO Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) officially inaugurated its Connecticut Chapter in Hartford, marking a significant milestone in strengthening business, trade, and professional networking opportunities among members of the Indian diaspora in the state and beyond. The launch ceremony was held at the Connecticut State Capitol’s Old Appropriations Room on July 30, 2026 and brought together community leaders, entrepreneurs, elected officials, and members of the Indian American community.
The ceremony was inaugurated by Governor Ned Lamont with the traditional Indian lighting of the lamp, symbolizing the official inauguration of the GCCI Connecticut Chapter. Gov. Lamont had earlier signed the Bill establishing the Connecticut-India Trade Commission at a ceremony held in the State Capitol in Hartford.
Reflecting on the shared values of the two nations, Governor Lamont observed, “The relationship between India and the United States is much more than commercial. We both fled colonialism to become the largest democracies on the planet Earth.” His remarks highlighted the deep historical, cultural, and democratic bonds that connect the two countries and provided a broader context for the launch of the new Chamber chapter.
The newly inaugurated GCCI Connecticut Chapter joins a growing network under GOPIO International’s vision of creating a global platform that connects entrepreneurs, investors, startups, professionals, and business leaders of Indian origin. The Chamber aims to facilitate trade, investment, innovation, entrepreneurship, technology transfer, mentorship, and professional networking, while strengthening economic ties between India and countries around the world. Through collaborative initiatives and chapter-based engagement, GCCI seeks to empower businesses of all sizes and provide opportunities for growth across industries.
Among the distinguished speakers was Connecticut State Senator Sujata Gadkar-Wilcox, who reflected on the remarkable journey and contributions of Indian immigrants to American society. Emphasizing the role of immigrant communities in shaping the nation’s identity, she stated, “Not only do Indians touch every part of the United States in different sectors and throughout the world, but also that they have come to the United States, just like our previous immigrant communities. They’ve become a fabric of the American story.” She further noted that organizations such as GOPIO play a critical role in expanding the visibility of the Indian American community and recognizing its many achievements. “I’m so glad today that we’re able to not just look to our future, but talk about historically what we also have,” she added, highlighting the importance of preserving and celebrating the community’s legacy while building future opportunities.
Consul General of India in New York, Binaya S. Pradhan, delivered a powerful address praising the accomplishments of the Indian diaspora around the world. He described overseas Indians as one of the most successful and dynamic global communities, not merely because of their economic achievements, but because of their contributions to the societies in which they live.
“Wherever the Indian diaspora has been, one common thing is that they are economically very successful,” Pradhan noted. “But another common thing, of which I am even more proud, is their contribution to the countries in which they live.” He emphasized that Indian Americans have become an integral part of the American success story, making meaningful contributions in healthcare, hospitality, education, technology, entrepreneurship, culture, and innovation.
Highlighting the community’s role in national development, Pradhan observed, “The Indian diaspora here has not only been part of the growth story back home in India. They have been part of the growth story here. They have been a net contributor to American nation-building.” He further emphasized the far-reaching influence of Indian Americans, stating, “We touch every aspect of American life, whether healthcare, hospitality, education, culture, business, or innovation.”
The Consul General also described the diaspora as an essential bridge between India and the rest of the world. “Today, the Indian diaspora acts as a bridge between India and the international world,” he said, emphasizing its role in promoting economic, educational, technological, and cultural cooperation across borders. Praising GOPIO’s longstanding service to overseas Indians, Pradhan remarked, “When it comes to organizing such initiatives, I must say unhesitatingly that GOPIO comes right at the top.” He concluded by extending his best wishes to the newly established Connecticut Chapter and expressed confidence that it would create new opportunities for business growth and India-US cooperation.
The launch of the Connecticut Chapter represents the culmination of efforts that began in 2025, when GOPIO International convened meetings with Connecticut-based entrepreneurs, professionals, and community leaders to assess interest in establishing a local chamber chapter. Participants unanimously supported the initiative, recognizing the need for a formal platform to facilitate networking, business expansion, partnerships, mentorship, and economic development opportunities for Indian-origin professionals and entrepreneurs in the region.
Providing the broader vision behind the initiative, GOPIO International Chairman Dr. Thomas Abraham outlined the strategic importance of creating a global commerce network rooted in the strength of the Indian diaspora. Noting that the global Indian diaspora numbers approximately 36 million people, he described it as one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing international communities. He highlighted India’s youthful population, entrepreneurial culture, and English-speaking workforce as major drivers of future global economic influence.
Dr. Abraham explained that GCCI has been incorporated in Connecticut to serve as a global platform connecting entrepreneurs, investors, startups, businesses, and professionals of Indian origin with one another and with partners in India. “By leveraging the expertise and resources of the Indian diaspora, GCCI aims to advance cross-border commerce, encourage innovation, and contribute to sustainable economic growth,” he said. Expanding on that vision, he added, “The GOPIO Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) is a global platform that connects Indian diaspora entrepreneurs, businesses, investors, startups, and professionals with one another and with their counterparts in India.” He stated that GCCI’s mission is to build a worldwide network through local chapters in regions with significant Indian diaspora populations.
GOPIO President Prakash Shah old the audience that Indian diaspora has become very successful in business wherever they have settled. He informed the audience about the monthly webinar on contemporary subjects being organized by GOPIO connecting the Diaspora community worldwide and the upcoming GOPIO Biennial Convention in Mumbai on December 18-20, 2026.
Others giving felicitation remarks were Alan Tan who is Co-Chair of the Commission on Women, Children, Seniors, Equity and Opportunity; Nandita Ruchandani of South Asia Bar Association and GOPIO-CT President Mahesh Jhangiani. GCCI Treasurer Prasad Chintalapudi concluded the launch ceremony with a vote of thanks. Indian Deputy Consul General Vishal Harsh and Consul Political Piyush Singh were also present at the launch.
The evening concluded with a networking reception and meet-and-greet session where entrepreneurs, professionals, elected officials, and community leaders exchanged ideas and explored future collaborations. Beyond the ceremonial launch, the event served as a practical demonstration of the Chamber’s mission: bringing people together to create meaningful connections that can drive innovation, business growth, and economic development.
As GCCI begins its journey in Connecticut, the new chapter is poised to become an important catalyst for strengthening business connectivity within the Indian diaspora and advancing the growing economic partnership between Connecticut and India.
