Sunny Deol’s upcoming historical drama Batwara 1947 has received clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) without a single cut, marking a significant milestone ahead of its theatrical release on August 14. The film has been awarded an ‘A’ (Adults Only) certificate, with sources indicating that the examining committee passed the film in its original form.
Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and produced under Aamir Khan Productions, Batwara 1947 is set against the backdrop of the Partition of India. The film stars Sunny Deol in the lead alongside Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi, Ali Fazal and Karan Deol. The project, earlier titled Lahore 1947, is inspired by Asghar Wajahat’s acclaimed play Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya O Jamya E Nai and explores themes of displacement, identity and communal harmony during one of the most turbulent chapters in Indian history.
According to reports, receiving certification without any modifications is uncommon for films dealing with politically and emotionally sensitive subjects such as Partition. The clean clearance is expected to boost confidence among the makers as promotional activities intensify ahead of the Independence Day weekend release.
The film also marks the reunion of Sunny Deol and director Rajkumar Santoshi after several successful collaborations. Music has been composed by A.R. Rahman, with lyrics by Javed Akhtar, adding to the film’s anticipation among audiences. Industry observers believe the combination of a strong historical narrative, an acclaimed creative team and Deol’s recent box office resurgence could make Batwara 1947 one of the most closely watched Hindi releases of the year.
