Filmmaker Meghna Gulzar’s upcoming thriller Daayra, starring Kareena Kapoor Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran, will hit theatres on September 18, 2026, the makers announced on Thursday. The film, inspired by true events, explores themes of crime, justice and punishment and is expected to be one of the most anticipated Bollywood releases of the year.

The film marks the first on-screen collaboration between actor Kareena Kapoor Khan and actor Prithviraj Sukumaran, both of whom portray police officers navigating a complex criminal investigation. According to the makers, Daayra delves into the grey areas between law and justice while examining the moral dilemmas faced by those entrusted with upholding the legal system.

Written by Meghna Gulzar along with Yash Keswani and Sima Agarwal, the film is being positioned as a thought-provoking crime thriller rooted in real-life incidents. The narrative is expected to reflect Gulzar’s signature storytelling style, which often combines intense drama with socially relevant issues.

The release date announcement has generated considerable interest among moviegoers, particularly because of the pairing of Kapoor Khan and Sukumaran, two acclaimed performers from different film industries. Industry observers believe the film could attract audiences seeking content-driven cinema alongside mainstream entertainment.

Gulzar, known for critically acclaimed films such as Raazi and Talvar, is expected to bring a nuanced perspective to the project. With its intriguing premise and strong cast, Daayra is poised to be a significant addition to the 2026 Hindi film calendar when it arrives in cinemas this September.
