The Federation of Gujarati Associations of USA (FOGA USA) proudly celebrated the successful completion of the first-ever FOGA USA National Gujarati Competition, held as part of the 2nd United Gujarati Convention 2026 in Orlando, Florida, during Memorial Day Weekend, May 22–25, 2026.

Modeled after the highly successful Gujarati Competition organized by the Gujarati Mandal of Central Ohio (GMOCO) since 2023, this pioneering national initiative was created with a simple yet powerful goal: to promote, preserve, and celebrate the Gujarati language among the next generation of Gujaratis growing up in the United States.

More than 50 children and youth from across the United States participated in the competition, demonstrating remarkable proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and appreciating the Gujarati language. At a time when maintaining heritage languages can be challenging, it is a matter of immense pride for the entire Gujarati community to witness children born and raised in America confidently expressing themselves in their mother tongue.

Participants showcased their talents through: Essay Writing, Public Speaking, and Poetry Recitation.

The competition topics were thoughtfully designed to inspire participants to explore family, Gujarati personalities, tourism, food, culture, and Bharat. It was particularly encouraging to see children and youth articulate their opinions through heartfelt Gujarati essays, vocalize their thoughts through Gujarati public speaking with confidence, and develop a meaningful connection with Gujarati literature through poetry. Their submissions demonstrated not only language skills but also a deep appreciation for Gujarati culture, history, values, traditions, customs, and cuisine.

The National Gujarati Competition has provided a truly unique and unparalleled platform for the Gujarati language on a national stage. Through their creativity and expression, these young participants reminded us that Gujarati is not merely a language—it is a living connection to our heritage, identity, and shared cultural legacy.

The exceptional talent uncovered through this inaugural competition exceeded all expectations. The passion, confidence, and linguistic ability demonstrated by the participants serve as a powerful reminder that the future of our mother tongue remains bright in America.

FOGA USA extends its heartfelt appreciation to all participants, parents, teachers, judges, volunteers, and community leaders who helped make this historic initiative a success. Special recognition is also extended to the Gujarati Mandal of Central Ohio (GMOCO.org) for pioneering a successful model that inspired the creation of this national platform.

Rupam Chokshi (competition coordinator) said, “It is wonderful that children and youth born and brought up in the USA can read, write, and speak in Gujarati and be able to express their thoughts in Gujarati.”

Kahani Patel (participant) said, “My mandir, especially Bal Sabha, and my family inspires me to read, write and speak in Gujarati. This language helps me stay connected with my grandparents who don’t speak English. It also helps me stay connected with many of our religious scriptures that are only in Gujarati. Also, my mom always taught me we should never forget our roots, our culture regardless where we live”

Kian Lakhani (participant) said, “Participating in the National Gujarati Competition was a very special experience for me. Speaking in Gujarati on the stage helped me feel more connected to our Gujarati language and culture. I feel proud to be part of a program that encourages kids like me to learn, speak, and celebrate Gujarati.”

Manav Rao (participant) said, “I appreciated being part of an event celebrating Gujarati language and culture”
