India will pause to remember the victims of one of its worst aviation tragedies on June 12 as Air India employees across the country observe a two-minute silence marking one year since the crash of Flight AI-171 near Ahmedabad. The observance comes amid continued demands from bereaved families for answers and accountability as investigations into the disaster remain incomplete.

Flight AI-171, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner bound for London Gatwick, crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025. The accident claimed 260 lives, including 241 people on board and 19 on the ground, making it one of the deadliest aviation disasters in India’s history. Only one passenger survived.

Air India said the nationwide tribute is intended to honour those who lost their lives and express solidarity with affected families. The commemoration extends beyond the airline, serving as a moment of reflection for the country’s aviation sector and the thousands of families touched by the tragedy.

The anniversary has renewed attention on unresolved questions surrounding the crash. Families of victims and the lone survivor have continued to seek greater transparency regarding the investigation and the final report, arguing that accountability is essential to preventing similar tragedies in the future.

Air India has stated that compensation and support efforts for affected families are continuing. According to the airline, the vast majority of families have received interim compensation, while the process of final settlements is underway.

As the nation marks the first anniversary of the AI-171 disaster, the remembrance ceremonies are expected to underscore both collective grief and India’s ongoing commitment to aviation safety and accountability.
