Gurindervir Singh has rewritten Indian athletics history by becoming the country’s fastest man with a 10.09‑second victory in the men’s 100‑metre sprint at the National Senior Athletics Federation Competition in Ranchi. The 25‑year‑old sprinter broke his own national record to enter the elite “10‑second club” and give India its first sub‑10.10 performance in the event.
Gurindervir clocked 10.09 seconds in the 100m final at the Birsa Munda Athletics Stadium on Saturday evening, finishing ahead of his rival and training partner Animesh Kujur. His time also emerged as the second‑fastest by any Asian athlete so far this season, behind only Japan’s 19‑year‑old Fukuto Komuro, who ran 10.08 seconds in May.
The run marks a major personal turnaround for Gurindervir, who had struggled with health issues, including stomach ulcers, before first claiming the national 100m record with a 10.20‑second run at the Indian Grand Prix 1 in Bengaluru in March 2025. Since then the record had been briefly reclaimed by Animesh Kujur with a 10.18‑second effort, but Gurindervir has now pushed India’s standard to the new 10.09 mark.
Officials and commentators have hailed the performance as a landmark for Indian sprinting, with many pointing out that Gurindervir’s 10.09 places him among the fastest men in Asia this season, not just in India. The Federation Cup win in Ranchi is expected to strengthen his case for selection in major multi‑sport events, including the upcoming Asian Games and Commonwealth Games, where India will be keen to test its capacity for runs under 10 seconds in the near future.
