India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has opened a new Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) field training and demonstration centre at Burari plains in Delhi. This move aims to boost preparedness for radiological and nuclear exigencies.

The centre was inaugurated on May 06, 2026, by Dr Samir V Kamat, Secretary of Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO. It will work as a unique DRDO-CBRN Centre of Excellence under the Institute of Nuclear Medicine & Allied Sciences (INMAS). The facility has state-of-the-art tools like a dedicated radiological and nuclear test bed facility, heavy ion research facility, emergency medical response units, and real-time field response units.

This test bed facility offers a controlled space to test nuclear energy tech, radiation detection, and hazardous material handling. It helps turn theory into real training for unusual threats. The centre will train responders from Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Home Affairs, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), and other agencies on CBRN crisis response.

INMAS plans workshops to ready the next generation of experts with the latest techniques. The event saw top officials like Director General Soldier Support System Dr Upendra Kumar Singh, Director General (Production Coordination & Services Interaction) Dr (Smt) Chandrika Kaushik, and Director General Resource & Management Dr Ravindra Singh.

This step strengthens India’s defence against nuclear risks. It bridges gaps in training for frontline teams. Experts say it marks a big push in national security.
