Dhanush’s new action drama Kara hit theaters on Thursday, April 30, and first-day viewers are calling it an “engaging, attention-gripping watch.” The film, directed by Vignesh Raja, opened to strong reactions across social media, with fans praising its intense storytelling and powerful performances.

Set in 1991 Ramanathapuram during the Gulf War, Kara follows Karasamy (played by Dhanush), a man forced to confront his abandoned past while protecting those who depend on him. It is an action thriller about a man torn between sin and virtue, fighting to save his family against all odds. The film runs for 2 hours and 41 minutes.

Viewers on X (formerly Twitter) slammed it as a “gripping, high-impact film.” One user wrote, “An interesting plot with excellent prologue… Dhanush, KS Ravikumar, Suraj & Jayaram’s performances were [strong], heist scenes were gripping [with a strong] interval block & some scenes in 2nd half.” Another called it a one-time watch with stretched emotional scenes but admitted it works well for Dhanush fans.

Dhanush delivers an intense, emotionally charged performance, earning widespread admiration. Mamitha Baiju also receives praise for her strong screen presence and grounded acting. The ensemble cast includes K.S. Ravikumar, Karunas, Jayaram, Prithvi Pandiarajan, Suraj Venjaramoodu, M.S. Bhaskar, Sreeja Ravi, and a surprise cameo by Siva Kartikeyan. Music is composed by GV Prakash Kumar.

This is Vignesh Raja’s second directorial venture after Por Thozhil. Fans on X are calling Kara better than Dhanush’s recent film Idli Kadai, noting it builds genuine tension, especially in the robbery sequences. While minor pacing issues were mentioned, the overall word-of-mouth points to a promising box office run.

Dhanush was last seen in Aanand L. Rai’s Tere Ishk Mein. He is also set to star in biopics of former President APJ Abdul Kalam and music composer Illaiyaraja. Kara is now playing in theatres across Tamil Nadu and overseas markets.
