India is in the grip of a severe heatwave, with 98 out of the world’s 100 hottest cities currently located in the country, according to data from AQI.in. Temperatures across many regions have crossed 40°C, with some places nearly touching 45°C, marking an intense and worrying climate trend.

Cities like Orai and Auraiya in Uttar Pradesh, and Jaisalmer and Phalodi in Rajasthan, are recording temperatures well above normal. The extreme heat has placed India at the epicentre of a global heatwave, raising serious concerns about public health, power supply, and long-term climate impact.

This is not just a regional issue. From central India to the Indo-Gangetic plains, dozens of cities have seen temperatures soar past 40°C, with several locations inching closer to the dangerous 45°C mark. The scale of the heatwave is unprecedented, with nearly the entire list of the world’s hottest cities concentrated in one country.

Health officials are warning of heatstroke, dehydration and other heat-related illnesses, especially among the elderly, children and outdoor workers. Power grids are also under strain as demand for cooling spikes across urban and rural areas.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heatwave alerts for multiple states, advising citizens to stay indoors during peak hours, drink plenty of water and avoid strenuous outdoor activity.

As India battles this scorching spell, the world is watching. With 98 of the 100 hottest cities now in India, the country is at the heart of a growing global temperature crisis.
