Patent applications in India jumped 30.2 per cent to a historic high of 1,43,729 in the financial year 2025-26, up from 1,10,375 in FY 2024-25. Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal shared this data on social media platform X on Sunday, calling it proof of India’s unstoppable innovation engine.
Goyal said more than 69 per cent of the total filings, came from domestic applicants, marking big rise from domestic filings in the previous year. He noted that states like Tamil Nadu led, followed by Karnataka and Maharashtra.
The growth shows India’s shift from “Made in India” to “Invented in India.” Over the past five years, patent filings have risen 146 per cent, from 58,503 in FY 2021 to 1,43,729 in FY 2026. Goyal credited government steps to strengthen the intellectual property rights ecosystem.
India now ranks as the world’s sixth-largest patent filer. Goyal posted: “Our patent filings soared to a historic over 1.43 lakh in FY 2025-26, marking a 30.2 per cent increase over last year.” This trend started from 45,444 filings in FY 2016-17 and keeps climbing.
Experts see this as a sign of rising startups and research. The data reflects policy reforms and digitization boosting local inventors.
